IOSH Working Safely Training Course for those employed in the Facilities Management business

ioshThis is a two-day course for those employed in various capacities within the facilities management business. The course is modular with the first three modules following the IOSH working safely syllabus. The fourth module is specifically designed to cover the hazards and risks associated with facilities management. However, each of the first 3 modules are also slanted towards health and safety issues and problems encountered by those employed within the facilities management business.

MODULE 1

The objectives to be achieved during module one are specific to those laid down by IOSH and therefore include ensuring that delegates obtain a firm understanding of what it means to "work safely". They will need to understand the specific and separate meaning of the words "hazard " and "risk", the importance of inspection techniques in hazard spotting and understand the theory and practice of risk assessment.

Examples of types of work place precautions are given together with the legal framework that lays down the hierarchy of workplace precautions. Delegates will also be informed of the numerous sources of information on health and safety precautions. Emphasis will be given to the various risk assessment techniques and in particular to the risks associated with facilities management.

MODULE 2

This module involves the examination of 10 hazards regarded as common to the majority of workplaces. It is therefore of vital importance that delegates achieve a clear understanding of each hazard, the corresponding risks and consequences together with the recognised methods of risk control for each.

  • FIRE
    Fire is the first of the common hazards to be tackled and the aim is that delegates delegates will learn of the significance of the fire triangle as the basis of fire causation and control.
  • ELECTRICITY
    The significance of electricity will be explained together with a description of the effects of poor control. The objective is for each delegate to be aware of the various consequences of lack of control and the range of protective and preventive measures available.
  • WORK EQUIPMENT
    The range of plant and equipment covered by the work equipment regulations will be explained along with the main principles of accident prevention. The concept of safe systems of work will be discussed together with examples of unsafe systems. Delegates will be made aware of the importance of training, instruction and information to enable competence in the use of work equipment. This part of the module will also include reference to the hazards and risks posed by mobile work equipment and lifting machinery.
  • MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE
    This part of the module covers the hazards and risks involved with the movement of people and includes falls from height, slips, trips and falls on the level and the importance of safe systems of work including written permits.
  • VEHICLES
    Delegates will learn about vehicle hazards and this will include hazards of reversing, unloading/loading, and includes the issues to be considered during risk assessment.
  • MANUAL HANDLING
    Manual handling is dealt with during this module by introducing the delegates to the very real problem of musculo-sceletal disorders. Delegates will learn the various costs of uncontrolled MSD's and the precautions to be observed.
  • DISPLAY SCREEN EQUIPMENT
    DSE hazards and risks are covered within this module and delegates will understand the main hazards and the risk control measures appropriate following DSE assessments.
  • NOISE
    The risk of noise induced hearing loss is included in this module and delegates will learn about the simple physics of noise transmission as well as the biological mechanism of the ear. Importantly they will learn about how NIHL occurs and how it can be prevented.

MODULE 3

The main objective of the module is to show delegates how risk control should be managed following well-accepted principles of safety management. This will include HS (G) 65 and reference to the influence of quality systems on safety management. Delegates will learn about the importance of the 4 C's and the main duties of employees and employers will be reinforced.

MODULE 4

This module aims to encompass the main specific hazards faced by those employed within the facilities management business. Delegates will receive detailed information on the various problems involved in the successful management of contractors on site. The landlord tenant relationship is explored with particular reference to legal duties. The hazards associated with building services and maintenance is explored and this includes the specific risks associated with legionella and asbestos within buildings.

Delegates will learn of their personal responsibilities for safety and aspects of public safety. Powers of enforcing authority inspectors are covered and delegates will receive a brief history of the HSE. Contractors and CDM is covered in this module as is incident control and security threats such as postal bombs risk management.
