IOSH Working Safely Training Course for those employed
in the Facilities Management business
This
is a two-day course for those employed in various
capacities within the facilities management business.
The course is modular with the first three modules
following the IOSH working safely syllabus. The fourth
module is specifically designed to cover the hazards
and risks associated with facilities management. However,
each of the first 3 modules are also slanted towards
health and safety issues and problems encountered
by those employed within the facilities management
business.
MODULE 1
The
objectives to be achieved during module one are specific
to those laid down by IOSH and therefore include ensuring
that delegates obtain a firm understanding of what
it means to "work safely". They will need
to understand the specific and separate meaning of
the words "hazard " and "risk",
the importance of inspection techniques in hazard
spotting and understand the theory and practice of
risk assessment.
Examples of types of work place precautions are
given together with the legal framework that lays
down the hierarchy of workplace precautions. Delegates
will also be informed of the numerous sources of information
on health and safety precautions. Emphasis will be
given to the various risk assessment techniques and
in particular to the risks associated with facilities
management.
MODULE 2
This module involves the examination of 10 hazards
regarded as common to the majority of workplaces.
It is therefore of vital importance that delegates
achieve a clear understanding of each hazard, the
corresponding risks and consequences together with
the recognised methods of risk control for each.
- FIRE
Fire is the first of the common hazards to be tackled
and the aim is that delegates delegates will learn
of the significance of the fire triangle as the
basis of fire causation and control.
- ELECTRICITY
The significance of electricity will be explained
together with a description of the effects of poor
control. The objective is for each delegate to be
aware of the various consequences of lack of control
and the range of protective and preventive measures
available.
- WORK EQUIPMENT
The range of plant and equipment covered by the
work equipment regulations will be explained along
with the main principles of accident prevention.
The concept of safe systems of work will be discussed
together with examples of unsafe systems. Delegates
will be made aware of the importance of training,
instruction and information to enable competence
in the use of work equipment. This part of the module
will also include reference to the hazards and risks
posed by mobile work equipment and lifting machinery.
- MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE
This part of the module covers the hazards and risks
involved with the movement of people and includes
falls from height, slips, trips and falls on the
level and the importance of safe systems of work
including written permits.
- VEHICLES
Delegates will learn about vehicle hazards and this
will include hazards of reversing, unloading/loading,
and includes the issues to be considered during
risk assessment.
- MANUAL HANDLING
Manual handling is dealt with during this module
by introducing the delegates to the very real problem
of musculo-sceletal disorders. Delegates will learn
the various costs of uncontrolled MSD's and the
precautions to be observed.
- DISPLAY SCREEN EQUIPMENT
DSE hazards and risks are covered within this module
and delegates will understand the main hazards and
the risk control measures appropriate following
DSE assessments.
- NOISE
The risk of noise induced hearing loss is included
in this module and delegates will learn about the
simple physics of noise transmission as well as
the biological mechanism of the ear. Importantly
they will learn about how NIHL occurs and how it
can be prevented.
MODULE 3
The main objective of the module is to show delegates
how risk control should be managed following well-accepted
principles of safety management. This will include
HS (G) 65 and reference to the influence of quality
systems on safety management. Delegates will learn
about the importance of the 4 C's and the main duties
of employees and employers will be reinforced.
MODULE 4
This module aims to encompass the main specific hazards
faced by those employed within the facilities management
business. Delegates will receive detailed information
on the various problems involved in the successful
management of contractors on site. The landlord tenant
relationship is explored with particular reference
to legal duties. The hazards associated with building
services and maintenance is explored and this includes
the specific risks associated with legionella and
asbestos within buildings.
Delegates will learn of their personal responsibilities
for safety and aspects of public safety. Powers of
enforcing authority inspectors are covered and delegates
will receive a brief history of the HSE. Contractors
and CDM is covered in this module as is incident control
and security threats such as postal bombs risk management.
Cost of course includes IOSH Working Safely Certificate,
